HIACE Lab Ph.D. student Peihang Li, supervised by Dr. Nade Liang, will present his research titled “Asymmetric Shifts in Risk Perception: Evaluating Driver Responses to Traffic Density Transitions” at the 69th Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) International Annual Meeting, to be held October 13–17, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, Illinois. His lecture presentation is scheduled for October 15 at 11:30 AM in Grand Hall J.

The study examines how drivers’ perceived risk evolves during transitions in traffic density and speed. Using simulated driving environments, Li found that perceived risk decreases rapidly when traffic becomes lighter but spikes sharply when density increases, followed by gradual adaptation. Interestingly, reductions in speed unexpectedly increased perceived risk before stabilizing over time. These findings emphasize the need for future traffic management systems and driver assistance technologies to account for asymmetric shifts in perceived risk during dynamic environmental changes.
