HIACE Lab Ph.D. student Kaiser Hamid, supervised by Dr. Nade Liang, will present his research titled “A New Evaluation Metric for Takeover Maneuver Quality: Comparing Human Drivers with Autonomous Driving Agents” at the 69th Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) International Annual Meeting, to be held October 13–17, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

The study introduces a novel evaluation metric to quantify takeover maneuver quality during conditionally automated driving transitions. By comparing the behavioral responses of human drivers and autonomous driving agents, the work assesses safety, smoothness, and control stability under time-critical scenarios. The proposed framework contributes to developing standardized performance measures for assessing human–automation collaboration and improving the design of takeover intervention systems.

This presentation underscores the HiACE Lab’s ongoing commitment to advancing human-centered evaluation methods and cognitive engineering research in the context of automated and intelligent transportation systems.
